Your Role in Safety

Your Role in Safety

Be involved in your health care – you know the most about you.

  • You as the patient are a part of your own healthcare team at our Markham or Uxbridge site.
  • Educate yourself – we can help.
  • Talk with your healthcare provider and ask questions. Listen to the answers and write them down if you need to. If you wish, bring someone with you to take notes or advocate for you.

What can you do to keep yourself safe?

  • Clean your hands and ask your caregivers and visitors to clean their hands.
  • Make sure that our staff members identify you properly by asking your full name and your date of birth and by checking your armband and/or paperwork.
  • Ask questions about your tests or treatments.
  • Keep a record of your past medical and/or surgical history and your current medications.
  • Tell us if you need help, if you have trouble seeing, hearing or if you feel dizzy, unsteady or faint.
  • Leave your valuables at home.
  • Follow all posted hospital policies.
  • Make sure your children have a guardian; check the Visiting a patient page for more information on making sure your children are cared for during your stay.
  • Make sure you know what you need to do when you get home from the hospital.
