About plastic surgery

The word ‘plastic’ comes from the Greek ‘plastikos,’ which means to mold. So the ‘plastic’ in plastic surgery means we are changing the shape of, or molding, parts of the body.

Plastic surgery is performed by surgeons who have extra training and accreditation in this type of surgery. Some plastic surgeons specialize in cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive surgery

Reconstructive surgery encompasses a wide variety of procedures done by plastic surgeons to reconstruct damaged tissues. These include breast reconstruction after mastectomy, breast reduction, facial surgery, hand surgery, and numerous other procedures.

Hand surgery

Plastic surgery for the hand includes fixing more complicated fractures where surgery is required to align the broken bone fragments; repairing severed nerves or tendons, or addressing certain conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome or trigger finger.

Facial surgery

Facial plastic surgery includes removing scars, reconstructing parts of the face after trauma, burns or cancer removal, or correcting facial differences such as cleft lip or palate.

Cosmetic surgery

This includes breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, liposuction and other procedures focused on improving appearance.
