Lower back pain
Lower back pain
MSH is one of the first community hospitals in Ontario to offer a rapid access clinic for low back pain (formerly known as the Interprofessional Spine Assessment and Education Clinic – or ISAEC – program).
Our rapid access clinic provides a targeted approach to help manage chronic lower back pain. The program is available to people over 18 years old with persistent low back pain and/or related leg symptoms such as pain, numbness or tingling for between six weeks and a year.
We are proud to have Dr. Kevin Koo, surgeon lead for the low back spine program for the region, as part of our interprofessional team.
During the assessment, the doctor or nurse will ask you questions about your condition and medical history, and examine your back. They will explain likely causes of your low back pain and create a plan to help you better manage your pain and improve your mobility. They will educate you about your condition and recommend any additional treatment.
If needed, the team will schedule appointments for spine specialists, book diagnostic imaging tests or a consultation with a surgeon.
Same day or short-stay spine surgery care
At MSH, we aim to set up your assessment, anaesthetic and medical consults, education, laboratory tests and imaging all in one day.
Depending on your situation, we can provide same-day or short-stay spine surgery. Same-day surgery allows you to recover in the comfort of your own home and can enable you to get back to your normal routine quickly.
