Ear, nose, throat (ENT) surgery is also called otolaryngology surgery. This is surgery of the head and neck areas to treat problems of the ears, nose or throat.

Your ENT surgery

If you are coming for surgery at Markham Stouffville Hospital, please also see our Your surgical care journey and Day of surgery pages, where you will find out important information such as how to prepare for surgery and what to do/where to go when you arrive at the hospital.

Types of ENT surgery

Common ENT problems that may require surgery include:

  • Frequent ear or sinus infections
  • Sinus pain
  • Deviated septum (where the wall between your nostrils is off centre)
  • Vocal cord disorders
  • Tonsillitis
  • Swallowing disorders

ENT surgery may also be needed for head or neck tumours, or for facial injuries.

ENT surgery is performed by an otolaryngologist. This is a doctor trained to treat patients with disorders and diseases of the ears, nose, throat, and other structures of the neck and face.
