Childbirth: Follow-up care

Childbirth: Follow-up care

When you leave the hospital, you will be given information to take to your baby’s doctor or midwife and all clinic appointments.

Your baby will need to be seen by a doctor or midwife within two to three days of discharge from the hospital. If you had no complications, book a follow-up appointment for yourself with your primary care provider in six weeks.

Obstetrical Outpatient Clinic

Most women will be referred to our Obstetrical (OB) Outpatient Clinic for follow-up care. If you had no complications, you should also book a follow-up appointment for yourself with your primary care provider in six weeks. If at any time you feel unwell after giving birth, see our handout on postpartum warning signs and when to call your doctor. If there is an emergency, call 911.

MSH has a partnership with Public Health for the Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Program and breastfeeding support. The public health nurse will visit weekdays to connect new families to supportive community programs.
