Orthopaedic Joint Assessment Centre (OJAC)

Orthopaedics is surgery of the spine and joints such as hips, knees, feet and shoulders. The orthopaedic services include a focus on sports injuries and the treatment of fractures referred from our Emergency Department. In addition we perform corrective surgery for foot deformities.

The Orthopaedic Joint Assessment Centre (OJAC) is part of a Ministry of Health and Long-term Care wide initiative, the Central LHIN has established centralized referral system for primary hip and knee joint arthroplasty for the region’s five Rapid Access Centres (RAC). The Central LHIN’s centralized referral centre is located here at Markham Stouffville Hospital.

This is very exciting for MSH’s surgical program. Having recently expanded to support the growth and demand in the community, this initiative will help improve access and wait times for our patients. Patients will receive world class surgical care right here in the community from our specialized team of surgeons.

Highlights of this initiative include:

  • Timely assessment and consultation
  • Ability to choose surgeon or hospital
  • A detailed assessment of condition with an inter-professional care provider prior to seeing an orthopaedic surgeon
  • Better access to information about joint replacement surgery
  • Maria CarusoSelf-management support prior to surgery
