Why come to MSH?
Quick access to hip and knee replacement surgery
MSH has a centralized referral centre for hip and knee replacement surgery, allowing rapid access to consultation – within two weeks of receiving your referral. In fact, MSH has one of the shortest wait times for joint surgery in the province.
Our total joint replacement program for hips and knees is robust, and we use the latest technologically advanced joints for replacement. Depending on your situation, we can provide same-day surgery or a short stay, which allows you to recover faster in the comfort of your own home.
We focus your care around you. This means that for your particular surgery, we will aim to set up your assessment, anaesthetic and medical consults, education class, labs and imaging all in one day.
Our hip replacement surgeries are done in a way as to avoid cutting into key muscle groups in that area. These are called ‘muscle-sparing’ techniques and they allow for a more comfortable and quicker recovery. The muscle-sparing techniques we offer are called direct anterior approach (DAA) and direct superior approach (DSA) hip replacements.
When you undergo orthopaedic surgery at MSH, our patient navigator will support you and your family throughout your surgical journey including 90 days after surgery. Our surgical liaison nurse will guide you and your family through the surgical process on the day of your surgery by answering all your questions and providing updates to your family while you are in surgery. We also have detailed information you can read in the comfort of your own home to prepare for your surgical experience with us. Your care doesn’t end when your surgery is over - if needed, follow-up appointments in our Fracture Clinic or Surgical Wellness Clinic will be coordinated for you.
Rapid access to our spine assessment program for low back pain
We are pleased to be one of the first community hospitals in Ontario offering a centralized rapid access centre as part of an Integrated spine assessment and education centre (ISAEC) program. It is an exciting way forward for lower back care. If you participate in the program, you will be seen within four weeks after we receive your referral.
The program provides education and evidence-based self-management plans designed to help ease your chronic low back pain. We may suggest additional treatment options such as exercise or pain management therapies. If needed, the team will schedule appointments for spine specialists, book diagnostic imaging tests or a consultation with a surgeon.
