The adult outpatient mental health program at MSH provides a number of services that include both individual and group therapy.
Our outpatient mental health team consists of psychiatrists, social workers and nurses. The team is trained to support you and your family in recovery from mental illness.
Most patients who are referred to our services will be offered an initial assessment by one of our clinicians. If you have questions about our services and the availability of these services, please consult your family physician.
- BRIDGE day treatment program
The day treatment program is called B.R.I.D.G.E.: Building, Restoring, Initiating, Developing, Growing and Empowering. It is an outpatient program that runs Monday – Thursday.
At the heart of this program is a “wellness model” to help patients learn and understand their illness. Each participant works with a care coordinator, who will help identify learning goals as well as provide ongoing support.
Referrals to the BRIDGE Day Treatment Program must be made by an MSH psychiatrist.
- Group therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) group for depression and anxiety: CBT is an empirically validated treatment for depression and anxiety. Groups meet for a 10- 12 week program. In this group, patients learn to:
- Identify and understand their feelings
- Identify problematic thoughts
- Change emotion driven behaviours
The emphasis is on changing problematic thinking and behaviours.
Coping with emotions therapy group: Patients participate in a 10 week group program to learn mindfulness skills, identify emotions and various strategies for coping with overwhelming emotions.
Interpersonal therapy (IPT) for depression: This is a 20 week group program, geared towards people experiencing depression and interpersonal difficulties in one or more of the following areas: grief/loss, interpersonal role disputes, role/life transitions and interpersonal challenges/difficulties.
These groups are scheduled throughout the year, depending on suitability and demand.
A referral by a physician is required to access these services. Physicians can obtain a copy of the referral form here. All referred patients will be called and screened for suitability for these groups.

Using different methods, the clinic aims to improve women’s sense of personal well-being, strengthen focus and mental flexibility, manage difficult emotions, promote self-awareness and distinguish healthy from unhealthy coping.
These services are available to patients of MSH across all departments including childbirth, cancer care, surgical and mental health. Patients can register for sessions starting in January 2019 now: services and schedule.
