After more than 25 years working in mental health in different capacities, Michelle Koehler was looking for a new opportunity to combine her clinical training with her passion for helping people. From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic Michelle volunteered and worked counselling frontline staff and physicians in Canada and the United States. She has seen first hand the effects of the incredible stress and anxiety COVID-19 has had on the people working on the frontline and she wanted to continue to help.
When Michelle saw the job posting for a Staff and Physician Wellness Leader at MSH, she knew that job was meant for her. It was position within a community hospital where she would be able to work with staff and leaders to create a role exclusively designed around the wellness needs of staff and physicians.
“Something just clicked in my head when I read the posting. It was the culmination of all of my experiences coming together in one perfect opportunity. It was a chance to use my skills to be of service to others in a time of such great stress and anxiety for people.”
Apart from being a registered clinical social worker with a long career offering counselling and therapy, Michelle has spent years studying and teaching mindfulness internationally. She will use her combination of skills and training to provide a broad range of wellness services to staff and physicians who reach out.
In her off work time Michelle practices meditation and mindfulness. She loves to travel with her husband and 11-year-old daughter. With the current travel restrictions, she’s enjoying life closer to home. She takes evening walks with her family and dog, and has developed a love for cooking comfort food. Michelle focusses on living in the moment and having gratitude for all that she has.
