Midwives
Markham Stouffville Hospital welcomes midwives as part of our team in the Chilbirth and Children's Centre. Midwives are primary caregivers in normal births. The emphasis in midwifery care is on the promotion of normal childbirth, the prevention of health problems and the recognition of pregnancy, birth and early parenting as normal, healthy life events. Midwives provide complete care and advice for healthy women during pregnancy, labour, birth, postpartum and also provide home visits for mothers and their newborn infants up to 6 weeks of age. Women who have chosen midwives as their primary care provider choose between a hospital or home birth. If complications arise, the midwife may consult an obstetrician or paediatrician to become involved in your care. Generally, midwifery patients are discharged home 6-8 hours after a vaginal birth. Care is continued at home with their midwife.
