Diabetes Education Centre
Diabetes Education Centre
The rate of diabetes in Canada is on the rise due to three major factors:
• An aging population — diabetes is more prevalent in older adults
• Heredity —more children are now born predisposed to diabetes
• Obesity — the rates are rising, leading to a higher incidence of diabetes
Together with Southlake Regional Health Centre and York Central Hospital, Markham Stouffville Hospital Corporation’s Diabetes Education Centre serves the community of York and Durham regions. Since 1996, we have been partners in providing acute care, comprehensive education programs and ongoing care for children, adolescents and adults with diabetes mellitus.
Our multidisciplinary program serves 2,500 adults and over 350 families with diabetic children throughout York/Durham Region. Our medical experts from the Region’s three Hospitals include physicians and paediatricians, diabetes nurse educators, registered dieticians, a social worker and an endocrinologist (a glandular and hormonal specialist). Our physicians and nurses are on call round the clock to respond to patient problems, including acute illness, hypoglycaemia and insulin dose adjustments.
Type 2 Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada and it is preventable. By developing responsive, progressive education programs, combined with the latest equipment, techniques and expertise, Markham Stouffville Hospital Corporation is leading your community in the prevention and control of diabetes.
