Acute Medical System

The Acute Medical System refers to the medical care Markham Stouffville Hospital provides for the treatment of patients with a serious injury or illness.

When needed, acute medical services are available to you at either Hospital Site - Markham and Uxbridge. The types of medical conditions you may experience that would require acute medicine tend to be periodic or temporary in nature, rather than long-lasting.

In most cases, our patients arrive in the Acute Care area through one of three mains entry points: the Hospital Emergency Department, transfer from another hospital or from a long-term care facility in the community, or as a direct result of their physician's referral.

Our interdisciplinary team of health care professionals provides advanced medical, surgical and cardiac care, supported by the latest technology and equipment.

When returning home, Markham Stouffville Hospital patients benefit from the fact that the Acute Care Medical System maintains strong community links and will ensure that  they have access to such appropriate services as MedicAlert, Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) and the Canadian Cancer Society and others. Be sure to ask your nurse if you think you will require assistance upon returning home.

The Acute Care Medical System unites areas of specialty: Emergency, Medicine & Telemetry, Intensive Care
