Patient Safety Indicators

Performance Indicators – Infection Control

Healthcare-Associated Infections

In keeping with our commitment to patient safety, and in compliance with the Public Reporting process, Markham Stouffville Hospital manages and keeps track of its infection rates.

What is a Healthcare-Associated Infection?

Healthcare-associated infections happen through the spread of microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses. These microorganisms are found in the community, at home, in schools and at work.

Healthcare-associated Infections happen when a patient gets an infection during their stay in a hospital that they did not have before their stay.
