Asthma Education Centre

Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in Canada affecting approximately three million Canadians. Over 50% of asthma sufferers, however, do not have their disease well controlled.

The goal of Markham Stouffville Hospital’s asthma education centre is to help you gain and maintain control of your asthma with the least amount of medication.

The clinic provides education for both children and adults based on the Canadian consensus guidelines.

You will learn:

  • How to recognize and understand your body’s warning signs
  • What triggers your asthma and how to avoid it
  • How to take inhaled medications with minimal side effects
  • Use an action plan-your personal guide if your asthma gets out of control
  • Achieve control of your asthma

Care Providers

A registered respiratory therapist will perform a simple breathing test, teach you  to use your asthma medication and provide you with education on asthma.

What You Should Know

Before Your Visit

Please do not wear perfume on the day of your visit.

During Your Visit

You will undergo an assessment with the asthma educator and develop your personal action plan.  Following the assessment, you will receive individual counseling and asthma management education.

After Your Visit

You will be scheduled for a follow up appointment, as required. Asthma may be seasonal and it is important to follow up if you have any new issues or questions. These appointments are 30 minutes in duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

 I have had asthma for years. Why am I being sent now for an appointment? Triggers, symptoms and medications change frequently. Visiting the asthma clinic will ensure you are following the asthma guidelines for treating and managing asthma. We will also make sure the medication you are using is properly controlling your symptoms.
 What do I need to bring to my appointment? Please bring all your medications and devices (such as a spacer) to your appointment.
 Do I need to stop my inhalers before the appointment? No, continue to take your medications as you normally would.
Will my doctor receive a report? Yes, the registered respiratory therapist reports to your physician or respiratory specialist on your progress after each visit. A detailed note is stored in your hospital health record and your physician’s office.
