Your Hospital Visit - Preparing for Surgery

To prepare for your surgery, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Smoke less often and drink less alcohol one week prior to your surgery
  2. Eat nothing after midnight on the night of your surgery.. Your stomach should be as empty as possible to prevent the risk of complications during anaesthesia. Milk and orange juice are considered solid foods. NO gum chewing, mints or candy.

You are allowed apple juice, ginger ale, water, black tea or black coffee up to four hours before the start time of your surgery. Please confirm the exact start time of your surgery with your surgeon's office 72 hours before your surgery, if the office has not contacted you. IMPORTANT: DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING FOUR HOURS BEFORE YOUR SURGERY - NOT EVEN WATER

  1. Notify your surgeon if your health status changes or if you develop a cold or any sudden illness in the week before your surgery.  Slight sniffles and a runny nose are not usually a sign of concern. Please inform your surgeon of any changes to your phone number or home address.
  2. Leave valuables at home. We make every effort to ensure a safe environment, however we cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen valuables.  Please leave large sums of money and jewellery at home.

Your Hospital Visit - What to Bring?

Your comfort and well-being is very important to us. Please bring the following with you for your appointment:

  • your valid health card
  • WSIB claim number (if applicable)
  • an updated list of medications you are currently taking including the dosage and frequency
  • all your prescription medications in their original containers
  • comfortable, loose fitting clothes and non-slip flat footwear
  • case for glasses/contact lenses (lenses must be removed prior to surgery and certain procedures)
  • pertinent information from your referring physician (documents, X-ray reports, test results)
  • credit card information (number and expiry date) to pay for additional hospital expenses

If your surgeon informed you that you will be admitted to the hospital after your surgery, please bring the following items to make your hospital stay as comfortable as possible:

  • personal care items such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste
  • pillow
  • housecoat
  • eye drops and prescription skin creams
  • any items specifically mentioned by your physician

Please be sure to have a bath or shower the night before or morning of your surgery, preferably with an antibacterial soap (if you have skin sensitivity to antibacterial agents, please use your regular soap). This will reduce the risk of infection from bacteria on your skin. Please do not have Shellac finish, or nail polish on your fingernails. No makeup is allowed and all jewellery and body piercing must be removed before you go the operating room. We recommend you leave these items at home.

The hospital is a smoke-free environment and smoking is not permitted. It is recommended that you do not smoke 48 hours before or after your surgery.

If you are ill, please contact your physician’s secretary and rebook your appointment or surgery.

Visit the Patients and Visitors section for general policies, visiting hours, and parking information.

Your Hospital Visit - Going Home After Same Day Surgery

For legal reasons you must be accompanied by a responsible adult after receiving anaesthesia or sedation. Someone responsible must stay with you overnight after your surgical procedure.

If the person driving you home is not waiting at the hospital, give the nurse a phone number where they can be reached.

Your ride should be available to pick you up as early as 1 1/2 hours after the end of your surgery.

You may not take a taxi or bus home unless there is a family member/friend to accompany you.
