Helping Cancer Patients Look Good Feel Better
Women diagnosed with any type of cancer within the past year now have access to a free hands-on workshop designed to help manage the appearance-related effects of cancer treatment.
The Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) program – the only national charity of its kind – empowers women to face their illness with two-hour cosmetic instruction from experienced make-up artists, as well as a free cosmetic kit. Women learn how to draw on eyebrows, apply foundation and care for their skin while undergoing chemotherapy treatments, as well as handle the aesthetic after-effects of cancer.
“The physical changes women experience during cancer treatment can be very difficult on them,” says Pauline Brillinger, Clinical Manager, Breast Health and Oncology Clinics at Markham Stouffville Hospital. “This program helps boost their self esteem so they can face their illness with confidence, while maintaining as normal a life as possible.”
Women often experience appearance-related effects during cancer treatment, including hair loss, rashes, dry skin and skin discoloration. These side effects can create unique challenges for women.
As Linda Cottell, LGFB Ontario Regional Manager, explains, “This session is often the first time women are together with other women facing the same challenges, and often they end up talking to one another and making dates to get together again.”
Markham Stouffville Hospital became the 110th site in Canada to offer the innovative, uplifting program. “The session is a great bonding experience for women and an opportunity for them to feel pampered,” Pauline adds.
Patients who have been diagnosed with cancer within the past year – at Markham Stouffville Hospital or elsewhere – can register for the program by calling 905.472.7373, ext. 3779. For more information about the Look Good Feel Better program, visit www.lookgoodfeelbetter.ca.
