Staff celebrate Uxbridge Cottage Hospital’s 50th year of care
It was an event that was 50 years in the making. On Tuesday, January 13, 2009, current and former staff, physicians and volunteers at the Uxbridge site gathered together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the hospital.
Those who attended the celebration had a chance to share some cake and refreshments, receive a 50th anniversary keepsake pin and view Uxbridge’s commemorative video which highlighted the hospital’s history and the many past and present staff, patients, physicians, board members and volunteers who contributed to the operation of the hospital over the years.
“This truly is a historic day,” said Janet Beed, President and CEO. “The fact that we are celebrating Uxbridge’s 50th anniversary is a real testament to the support the community has for the hospital.”
When the Uxbridge hospital first opened its doors on January 13, 1959, it was a two-storey brick structure that housed 25 beds and offered residents medical and surgical care, diagnostic and obstetrical services and an emergency department.
Over the years, the services provided in Uxbridge have changed and in 2004, Uxbridge joined Markham Stouffville Hospital in a natural partnership that allowed both sites to provide care close to home for members of the community and surrounding areas.
“Joining with Uxbridge Cottage Hospital was a natural fit for us,’ said Janet. “A number of the services offered at Uxbridge were already being provided by Markham Stouffville Hospital physicians. By aligning our institutions we have been able to establish a real partnership of care, incorporating new technology and management practices that clearly help us focus and provide the best care possible to the residents of our communities.”
Tuesday’s celebration included a video link between the Uxbridge and Markham sites that allowed both groups the opportunity to witness the ceremony and take part in the celebrations. At the end of the ceremony, the Mayor of Uxbridge, Bob Shepherd raised a flag outside the hospital celebrating the 50 year anniversary.
“The hanging of the 50th anniversary banners and flag is a real tribute to the residents of our communities,” said Elaine Goulbourne, Director of Uxbridge site. “We look forward to celebrating this great milestone all year long and celebrating with the community at a public event in May.”
