The Medicine/Inpatient Oncology Unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital serves two different patient populations: patients who have acute medical conditions and patients with cancer from initial diagnosis and treatment to meeting end-of-life care needs.

Goals of the Medicine/Oncology Inpatient Unit

It is the goal of the health care team to offer family-centred care that adheres to best practices in acute medicine and oncological care. On admission to the unit, the care team will facilitate assessment, diagnosis, and development of an individualized treatment plan.

Patients admitted to the hospital with an acute medical or oncological-related diagnosis are transferred to 3 East, building A, including those from Markham Stouffville Hospital (Emergency Department or Oncology Clinic) and Uxbridge Hospital.

The Health Care Team in the Medicine/Oncology Inpatient Unit

The interprofessional team that will be part of the circle of care for all patients and their families consists of physicians (general internal medicine and oncologists), physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, therapy assistants, speech language pathologists, social workers, patient flow coordinators, pharmacists, and Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) home and community care coordinators.
